Ancients   1991
User rating: 6 DOS Shareware (partial game) RPG
Developed by Farr-Ware
Published by Epic MegaGames

An RPG with a 3D, first-person perspective, much like the Moraff games, but without the benefit of a map. It has all the usual elements of an RPG: you can pick character types, develop your attributes, cast spells, fight monsters. Episodes are titled as though they are separate games, but the second episode is a continuation of the first, and Epic advertised them as episodes of the same game. There are 2 episodes in this game, with only the first episode playable in the shareware version.

Aspetra   1996
User rating: No rating DOS Shareware (partial game) RPG
Developed by Zonarware Compatibility guide
Published by Zonarware

Perhaps the most advanced shareware RPG ever released for DOS, Aspetra is a console-type RPG with an epic story. The pseudo real-time battle system is straightforward and polished, and the graphics and sound are quite good for this genre. Equip weapons and armor, cast magic, and fight monsters as you explore a huge fantasy world full of towns and dungeons. Talk to the people to aid you in your quest and cause the story to unfold. A real treat for RPG fans. The registered version completes the story that begins in the shareware version.

Castle of the Winds   1992
User rating: 10 Win16 Shareware-turned-freeware RPG
Developed by SaadaSoft
Published by Epic MegaGames
Screenshot

Castle of the Winds is a cult classic RPG for Windows. At the beginning of the game, you have ability points that you can distribute between three characteristics, and you can choose your hero's gender. The storyline is linear and the gameplay and inventory system are cunningly simple. In contrast to the cities, the dungeons are almost monochrome, and the graphics throughout the game are minimalist. It may not look like much, but something about it makes it surprisingly fun. There are two volumes in this game, with only the first volume playable in the shareware version.

Part 2: Lifthransir's Bane

DND   1984
User rating: 9 DOS Shareware (full version) RPG
Developed by R O Software
Published by R O Software

Based on Daniel Lawrence's dungeon crawl game for mainframe computers, DND is widely regarded as the first computer role-playing game. DND was ported and rewritten for many different computer systems, sometimes by the author, and sometimes without his knowledge. Bill Knight discovered the game and ported it to the PC. Two new dungeons have been added, but it is otherwise faithful to the original. There are three character types: fighter, magician, and cleric. Your character has attributes such as strength, intelligence, and agility, which can change throughout the game. The dungeons are rendered in ASCII text, and form a 20×20×20 maze. You can pick up magical items, fight monsters, cast magic, and find treasure. Hit points and skill at casting magic increase as you gain experience points and level up. Your goal is to find an ORB that grants immortality, hidden somewhere in each dungeon. If one dungeon proves too challenging, your character can leave via the entrance and enter a different dungeon. One of the most addictive games ever, DND is a classic. There are 5 dungeons in this game.

Lamorte
Shvenk's Lair

Dungeons of the Necromancer's Domain   1988
User rating: No rating DOS Shareware (full version) RPG
Developed by R.O.Software
Published by R.O.Software

TSR's lawyers insisted DND be renamed due to the similarity to D&D, so Bill Knight rewrote his famous DND port to make it an original game. The acronym remains "DND", the version number starts at 2.0, the copyright information still begins in 1984, so is it truly a new game? I can't comment on source changes, but all of the dungeons are new, the Extended ASCII character set is used to draw the walls with box drawing symbols instead of letters, and the game is generally enhanced. If you like DND, you should feel quite at home in this "sequel". There are three character types: fighter, magician, and cleric. Your character has attributes such as strength, intelligence, and agility, which can change throughout the game. The five dungeons are rendered in ASCII text, and form a 20×20×20 maze. You can pick up magical items, fight monsters, cast magic, and find treasure. Hit points and skill at casting magic increase as you gain experience points and level up. There are 5 dungeons in this game.

Infernal Tome, The   1996
User rating: No rating DOS Shareware (partial game) RPG
Developed by Magic Lemon Software
Published by MVP Software

The Infernal Tome has one of the more creative plots I've seen. Two scientists become powerful enough to create an entire world, then hide the knowledge of their power in a book called the Infernal Tome which they hide in the new world, called Garon. When one of the creators banishes the other into Garon, the fallen creator makes a deal with the king of Garon in order to find the Infernal Tome. You must guide a team of four through the world to find it before it falls into evil hands. Gameplay and graphics are typical of a PC RPG. There are 3 episodes in this game, with only the first episode playable in the shareware version.

Solar Winds   1993
User rating: No rating DOS Shareware (partial game) RPG
Developed by Epic MegaGames
Published by Epic MegaGames

This is not a typical RPG. The game takes place in a far away galaxy, where humans live in a solar system orbiting a star called Enigma. You are Jake Stone, a notorious smuggler, and you have a cool space ship. It's an odd premise for an RPG, but a story unfolds as you talk to people throughout the solar system, and you have a lot of freedom in the decisions you make. You can do some things out of order, and decide whether to negotiate with people, or just kill them. The game goes on regardless of what decision you make. Defeating enemy space ships increases the energy available for you to allocate to your ship's attributes, such as shields and weapons, and you get new items to improve your ship as you progress. Other than a lack of swords, magic and dragons, this really is an RPG. The first episode is a little shorter than I expected, but otherwise I find it engrossing and original. The second episode was originally known as "Solar Winds: Galaxy", but was renamed to "Solar Winds: Universe" in v2.0. There are 2 episodes in this game, with only the first episode playable in the shareware version. NOTE: Solar Winds v2.0 lists as v2.0 in the documentation by Tim Sweeney, but v1.1 in the configuration screen.

Telengard   1985
User rating: 8 DOS Freeware (former commercial) RPG
Developed by Daniel Lawrence Compatibility guide
Published by Daniel Lawrence
Graphics: CGA 320×200×4c

Daniel Lawrence's dungeon crawl game for mainframe computers, DND, was so popular that university students were using up all the system resources playing it. Under increasing pressure from system administrators, Lawrence bought a Commodore PET 2001 and decided to port the game for use on microcomputers. Unfortunately, the maps wouldn't fit in memory any more, so he reduced the number of dungeons from three to one, and instead of a map, he had the game generate the map algorithmically. This allowed him to create a 200×200 grid with 50 levels – that's two million "rooms" – from a small piece of code at runtime. The game was ported to many different computers and published by Avalon Hill. While DND was text-based, the PC version of Telengard featured CGA graphics. As in DND, you can pick up magical items, fight monsters, cast magic, and find treasure. Hit points and skill at casting magic increase as you gain experience points and level up. Whereas DND is turn-based, Telengard is played in real time, which means that monsters can attack you even when you're not moving.
