Turok: Dinosaur hunter was a surprise hit on the Nintendo 64. The protagonist, an American aboriginal named Tal'Set – the latest in a long line of Turoks – must fight his way through the Lost Land, a realm filled with dinosaurs and aliens, while being hunted by the Campaigner's henchmen. The game was known for its high quality graphics and extremely detailed dinosaurs, as well as the realistic way in which enemies die. Turok can walk, run, jump, climb, swim, strafe, and look and move in every direction. A variety of weapons are available, ranging from knives and bows, to guns, to futuristic energy weapons. Pieces of the ultimate weapon, the Chronoscepter, are scattered throughout the levels. The Windows version retains the infamous distance fog that was used to hide distance objects as they get drawn, to prevent them from appearing to pop into existence out of thin air. The first level leads to a hub that has portals to the other levels, which must be unlocked by finding keys within the levels. There are 8 levels in this game, with only the first level playable in the shareware version.
