Taking place immediately after the events of Descent II, you pilot a space ship that moves 360 degrees in all three dimensions inside of space mines. You work for a mining corporation whose bases have been attacked by an invasion force that is heading towards Earth. The manufacturing facilities have been adapted from building mining robots to develop a robot army. Your mission is to move from mine to mine, destroy the core and escape before the entire mine is obliterated. The GuideBot, introduced in Descent II, is still present. Descent 3 gains DirectX, OpenGL and 3Dfx Glide graphics in the transition to Win9x. Despite being limited to a resolution 640×480, the graphics are significantly improved from Descent II. The robots have much more intelligent AI. A demo was released before the game was released in 1999, featuring a level in the Beta Ceti system on the planet Tiris, where the hero wiped out a virus in Descent II. The belief is that the virus may have mutated. A second demo was released later on, which takes place on the Martian moon Deimos. There are 15 levels in this game, with only 1 level playable in each of the shareware demoes.
