The second game in the popular Age of Empires series. You command one of 13 historical empires and help them develop their economy, food supply, technology, and military. Naturally, conquest is the ultimate goal. Players start with an empire that is in one of four "ages" – the Dark Age, Feudal Age, Castle Age, or Imperial Age – which means that only certain technologies are available. The player can bring his civilization into the next age to make better weapons, armor, and ships available. Creating units requires varying amounts of four resources, so players must chop down trees for wood, forage, fish, hunt, or farm for food, and mine for gold and stone. Historical information is provided before and after every level, making the game educational as well as addictively fun. In 2000, an expansion pack called The Conquerors was released, which adds 5 additional civilizations – making four civilizations for each region, and adding a New World region – 4 new campaigns, 11 new units, 26 new technologies, and a number of other improvements. The shareware version is limited to the William Wallace Learning Campaign.

A high definition remake for Steam, Age of Empires II HD, was released in 2013. An expansion called The Forgotten added 5 new civilizations: Incas, Indians, Italians, Magyars, and Slavs. In 2015, an expansion called The African Kingdoms added 4 new civilizations: Berbers, Ethiopians, Malians, and Portuguese. In 2016, an expansion called Rise of the Rajas added 4 new civilizations: Burmese, Malay, Khmer, and Vietnamese. A total of 31 civilizations are playable across all expansion packs.
