This is a copied and pasted question from another site. I hope this is the relivant area to put it in.
Yo! Got Discworld and have it sort of running under Dosbox, however a few probs.
1.) When I play the game in full screen mode it tells me that it's an 'unknown mode'.
2.) I managed to get the sound (voices and sfx) working by running the 'sblaster' file before the game but there's no music.
3.) whenever i save game it never actually saves. I click on load and there's nothing there.
Surely somebody else has got this game working? Any help would be greatful, thanks ^^

Hmm. I haven't played that game personally. The first thought that comes to mind is that since this is a CD-ROM game, maybe the data folder should be loaded as a CD-ROM (mount d c:\datafiles -t cdrom).
If anyone knows the answer to this one, please add it to the wiki at http://wiki.classicdosgames.com.
EDIT: I just noticed that the game is from Psygnosis, makers of Lemmings. Lemmings hates Windows so much that it won't even run in a Windows MS-DOS Prompt. It could be that DOSBox doesn't quite emulate DOS well enough to solve the Windows incompatibility issues. I've had some fun adventures trying to get Lemmings to work properly. I suggest posting on DOSBox's forum at http://vogons.zetafleet.com/index.php?c=7.

And another forum entry by Terramax on a different forum that may prove helpful:
VOGONS Forum - Running Discworld PCCD rom on DOSbox
And here's the solution that finally solved the problems:

No installation, I knew it!
Anyway, copy the entire contents of the CD somewhere on your hard drive. Right-click on that folder (under Windows), Properties, uncheck "read-only", OK, say you want it applied to all subfolders, files, etc.
Then, under DOSBox, run setsound, choose Gravis Ultrasound for Audio (IO 240, IRQ 5, DMA 3 are the DOSBox defaults; or enter the appropriate settings if you've changed them yourself), and General MIDI for music. Then save the settings and run disc (or the game exe, dwb I think).
And that should be it. See how easier it is when you actually try and provide some information...?

Setsound doesn't seem to exist on DW. Tells me illegal command if I type setsound.
I tried loading a sound file called PMIDPAK and it said this.
MIDI Sound Package - Copyright (c) 1993, John W. Ratcliff :v3.0
Miles Desigh Inc. MIDI music driver 'MIDPAK.ADV' not found.
Run SETM to define sound hardware.
I typed 'SETM' and 'SETMUSIC' but nothing happened but the illegal command.
P.S. Sorry I didn't give all info last time.

This is all very odd. My version has the setsound programme, but not all those other things that you mention. No matter, we'll work it out.

Silly, silly, silly me...
Well, actually, no: silly, silly, silly Discworld developpers.
They didn't include proper sound devices management in the original version: what you need is version 1.04, with the use of this patch.
Here's what you'll do. Move the contents of all your \DW\DISCWLD\ directly into your \DW folder, that'll make things easier. You can also delete the whole DRIVERS subfolder. Then uncompress the patch in your \DW\ folder (which is where now all the game files are) and run disc104.exe (don't worry about the update.bat thing).
Then you'll be able to run setsound and all that, as I explained earlier.
Hopefully, that should be it... finally.
-----------------------------------------------------
Terramax
-----------------------------------------------------
Okay I managed to get the file somewhere else. I then dumped the dw104 file into the subfolder, opened it with setsound and let it do its magic.
And is it me or is the music in the pc version different to the psx version?
Oh and, excuse me if you've already explained how but how do I fix the save problem (it won't remember my save games)?
Oh, and, I'm really thankful for so far ^^

I thought making the folder writeable would be enough to get the saves to work, but obviously it's not that... I should have checked, which I now have. OK, in DOSBox, go to your \DW\ folder (which is where now all your game files should be, right? Go to \DW\DISCWLD\ instead if you didn't move them), and type:
Code:
md save
And then launch the game normally and you should now be able to save.
-----------------------------------------------------
Terramax
-----------------------------------------------------
Nope. Dosbox accepts md save and creates a save folder but when I save it doesn't appear in the load screen or in the save folder.
-----------------------------------------------------
Kurufinwe
-----------------------------------------------------
Does DOSBox say anything (in the DOSBox console) when you try to save, such as Warning: file creation failed: c:\DW\SAVE\SG.1 (which is what I get if the SAVE subfolder doesn't exist)?
-----------------------------------------------------
Terramax
-----------------------------------------------------
Warning: file creation failed: C: \oldgames\DISCWLD.CD\SAVE\SG.1
-----------------------------------------------------
Kurufinwe
-----------------------------------------------------
I know there's a better way to do that (and store the savegames where the game wants you to), but it's high time the damn thing started working, so let's forget about proper ways.
So, we'll just create the save folder wherever the game wants it to be. So, in DOSBox, where you're under C:\ (not C:\DW\):
Code:
md DISCWLD.CD
cd DISCWLD.CD
md SAVE
And the launch the game normally.
It shouldn't have been so hard to get this game to work normally, but, well, I dunno, I have very fuzzy memories of how I first got it to work, and the fact that it doesn't have any kind of proper installer certainly doesn't help.
I'm not going to say 'and that should be it', as I've already said it prematurely far too many times; I'll just keep my fingers crossed.
-----------------------------------------------------
Terramax
-----------------------------------------------------
YES! It worked (has a heart attack).
Okay, so I've done that and the last thing, how do I change the frame size of dosbox automatically (my pc monitor doesn't support this game full size, even though DW2 works fine in full screen)?
I tried looking on the read me file and on the dosbox forum but nothing on this topic.
Hopefully this should be the last question.

I'm not very knowledgeable about the DOSBox graphic modes; I found something that worked for me, but this all depends on both your video card (ATIs and nVidias behave slightly differently) and your monitor.
My advice is that you just experiment for yourself with the various options. Open your dosbox.conf, and try playing with the options in the [sdl] and [render] sections. There are explanations inside the file, and more detailed ones here and here. I especially advise you to try fiddling with output, fullfixed & fullresolution (those two work together, and I think they're what you need), possibly hwscale, as well as the scalers. I know this is very vague but, as I said, this really depends on your hardware.
And good to hear that it is finally starting to work.

I've got a copy of discworld and am having trouble playing it.
The program runs fine on straight XP (No Dosbox or the like), but no sound and I have the save problem. I tried changing the directory to discwld.cd but still it doesn't work.
As for sound, I used the setsound utlility and said it found the hardware, but still nothing. There's another sound config program, config.bat, but it seems to run a completly different program with a different set of settings. confusing me even more.
the patch you gave only seems to make things worse as well, I had to reinstall discworld to get it to run again after running the patch.

I got VDM sound but still no luck. Their main site is down, so I can't get at the compability list to see if there's some trick to getting Discworld to work (As suggested in their readme file).
Also I'm still confused by there being two sound install programs for discworld that seem completly different (They give completly different options). Theirs Setsound.exe and batch file that runs "DWU.exe -c". Which one is right?
(And I'm still having trouble with saving)
Help would be greatly appreciated.
