Game patches

Post by MrFlibble »

For simplicity's sake I've decided to split the shareware/demo patch part of the original thread, as otherwise it would be too large and overloaded with various information to find anything easily. Apart from patches, listed in this thread also are additional utilities that can be used with a shareware version of a game (if available).

It's interesting to note that many, if not most patches for shareware games concern the first-person perspective action games - perhaps because the distributives of those were much larger that of other games, making it problematic for many users to re-download an updated version each time back then.

Since you did all the work of finding them for me, I decided to add them to the site.

Only official (not user-created) patches will be archived. I'm taking the Apogee/3D Realms patches from 3DR's download page, so my Raptor patches have different filenames from the ones you found.
Today entirely the maniac there is no excuse with the article.

Great, thanks a lot! :D

That goes without saying, of course :)

Apparently this has something to do with Apogee's switch to more modern installers. Some of the old ones have the fancy ASCII art screens, like the old installers of the shareware games themselves (e.g. ROTT or Duke3D). Those old versions are basically RTPatch patches packaged with the regular installer shell (similarly to the shareware versions which are basically self-extracting ZIP archives that are packaged with the custom installer interface). How the new patches work I have no idea.

Thanks, I added all of the Epic MegaGames patches. It makes me a bit unhappy that Epic listed the Fire Fight patches as being v1.0 to v1.1, but the timestamp of 31 July 1997 matches the release date for v1.2, so it makes more sense that they would be patches to v1.2 as the filenames suggest.

Actually, I noticed that too, maybe it's just that they forgot to update the description on the site, because the filenames clearly suggest that the patches are to v1.2.

There's also this confusion with Tyrian v2.1/v.201, and some of the older games have been branded v2.0 without any actual reason (the EXE is the same), although I'm not sure if the downloads on the Epic's website from 1998 have this feature.

However, other shareware developers from the time also released some updates for their games that solely comprised of updated ordering information while the programme itself remained the same.

Since you seem to include retail versions patches as well, here's a few for Warcraft II:

I've moved this thread to the Game requests section, as a parallel to the missing game versions thread (but for patches).

Recently I have found the original Cyberdogs game page, and along with v1.0 of the game (already present on the site) there's a patch to v1.1 which I think can also be added: dogs_v11.zip [Added to the site]

Here's what Ronny Wester says about the patch himself:
Ronny Wester wrote:Some very minor changes were made in v1.1. It's a lot easier to make loads of money.
Personally, I prefer v1.0.

I had said that only official patches would be included, but I made an exception for Mah Jongg -8514-. In this case, it isn't a patch to upgrade one version to another, but to fix a bug in Borland's BGI for the 8514/A adapter that caused unwanted lines. I'm sure that Ron would approve, if I could reach him. Thoughts?

If there is a fix that helps run a game, I think it's perfectly normal to include it - with the note of course that it is not official.

Crack dot Com
Abuse From the readme:
This patches the registered version of Abuse to the retail (store)
version of Abuse. This patch is only for use by those who ordered Abuse
by calling the Crack dot Com 1-800 number, and I'm sorry, but there is
no patch for the Unix versions of the game.

If you have modified any files in your abuse directory, we strongly
recommend you delete your abuse directory and reinstall from the original
CD or floppies.

Run "dopatch", and specify the location of your abuse directory. The
program will take care of the rest.

If you have trouble using this patch, please e-mail ddt@crack.com.
Before you do so, please take care to make sure you've tried hacking
on it a bit. Very busy.

Thanks!
