Three of the items are useless in the shareware demo. Aeron doesn't get poisoned or suffer any status ailments, so there is no need to buy purifying gel. Since the party only has one member, Essence of Life can never be used. Even if Aeron could be put to sleep, there would be no one to use the Smelling Salts.

Aeron starts at Level 0 for some reason and is promoted to Level 1 when he has 50 experience points. Thereafter, he goes up a level every time his experience doubles. The formula for XP required to reach a given level is 50*2n-1.

Walkthrough
As there are really no traps in the game, I won't bother with a screen-by-screen walkthrough. Navigating the dungeons and the overworld is simple with the maps above.
At the beginning of the game, Aeron dies extremely easily and there's not much that you can do about that. If he survives to Level 1, he'll have enough Hit Points and Defense Points that he can pretty much explore the Cronder Sewers indefinitely, so the beginning of the game is all about surviving long enough to promote to Level 1.
You can save at any point in the game, even while in dungeons, so the easy (cheap) way to survive is to just save frequently and restore every time you get killed. This can be extremely tedious when Aeron is low on HP, and since he isn't very good at escaping at Level 0, Aeron can only fight enemies that can't harm him when he's weak (enemies will "MISS" every time when Aeron's Defense Points are high enough relative to the enemy's Attack Points), and he'll be killed in every battle against the enemies that can harm him. So yes, you can just save and restore hundreds of times, but you'll get to Level 1 a lot faster if you're smart about how you start the game.
Grab the Hygeian Herb from the house that Aeron starts in front of right away. Aeron doesn't have enough money to buy Hygeian Herbs or weapons at the beginning of the game, so the only way to improve your character at the start is by buying armor. The armor shop is in the north-east corner of town.
Aeron starts the game with 10 gold, which can buy +4 defence points worth of armor. He could purchase the Cloth Cap (+2) and the Quilted Vest (+2) for 10 gold, or one of each of the 2 gold items (+1 x 4) for 8 gold, or two of the 2 gold items and the Quilted Vest, or three of the 2 gold items and the Cloth Cap for 10 gold. With 8 Defense points, none of the enemies in the Cronder Sewers can harm Aeron, except for Giant Maus and Snout.
The best strategy is to go directly to the Allnight Man's building in the south-east corner and solve the spike puzzle to collect the 2 gold in the chest. While it's only 2 gold, this allows Aeron to buy +5 defense points of armor by buying the Cloth Cap, Quilted Vest, and one of the 2 gold items, or all of the 2 gold items and the Cloth Cap, or three of the 2 gold items and the Quilted Vest. I recommend against a combination that involves buying the Cloth Headband, since there is one in the Cronder Sewers near the Dagger Pin. The Giant Maus and Snout can still harm Aeron with 9 Defense points, but he'll survive a bit longer, and have to restore less frequently. At this point, you can probably make it to Level 1 with a single Hygeian Herb, if you don't want to die and restore.
Cronder Sewers
Treasures:
1-1: Dagger Pin
1-4: Hygeian Herbs
1-7: Large Knife
2-7: Hygeian Herbs
2-2: Cloth Headband
3-1: 50 gold
3-4: 25 gold
3-7: 20 gold
5-1: Rondel
5-7: Small Knife
Enter: 4-7
Alternate exit: 5-5
The conservative route is to go 4-7, 4-6, 4-5, 3-5, 3-6, 3-7 collecting the Hygeian Herb, 3-6, 2-6, 1-6, 1-7, collecting the Large Knife. You'll probably be Level 1 by now, and have a better weapon, so you should be pretty safe in the Sewers now. Now go to 1-6, 2-6, 3-6, and 3-5, then follow the directions in the aggressive route starting at the bold 3-5.
If you don't want to waste time, the Large Knife and the entire conservative route can be skipped. The aggressive route is to go 4-7, 4-6, 4-5, 3-5, 3-4, 4-4, 4-3, 3-3, 4-2, 3-2, 5-2, 5-1, collecting the Rondel. You'll probably be Level 1 (Level 2 or 3 if you took the conservative route) and have a powerful weapon by now, so you should be pretty safe in the Sewers now. Now go to 4-1, (optionally 3-1 for the 50 gold), 4-2, 3-2, 3-3, 4-3, up the other side of 3-3, 3-2, 3-1, 2-1, 1-1, collecting the Dagger Pin. Mission accomplished! The fastest way out is 2-1, 3-1, 3-2, 3-3, 4-3, 4-4, 3-4, down the other side of 4-4, 5-4, 5-5, and take the ladder to leave the Sewers.
Take the Dagger Pin to the Allnight Master and trade it for the Brass Key. You can now break into the Governor's Palace. Try to steal from the Governor. You'll fail and be thrown in jail, but the Governor will now let you leave the town.
Liber Abbey is easy to find by following the northern coastline to the east (go up and then right). When you reach the Abbot, you can either join him or fight him. In either event, you'll be a Monk after the fight, and you will no longer be able to enter Cronder. If there's anything you want to buy in Cronder, this is your last chance!
Things to do before leaving Cronder. Cronder is the only place where you can buy the Padded Vest and the Leather Chaps. I highly recommend buying them before you speak to the Abbot. Cronder is also the only place where you can buy Wizard's Brew and Dragon's Blood. They're not essential, but the Wizard's Brew could be useful in the Cave of the Test, and the Dragon's Blood could be useful in the battle with Hyeagle. Finally, Cronder is the only place where rings can be purchased. All of the rings add only a single point to whatever attribute they affect (see chart), so for 500 gold, they're probably not worth it. The Crystal Ring is probably the least interesting, as the only enemies in the game that cast magic are the Badger (Claws) and Hyeagle (Smite).
Liber Abbey
When you reach the Abbot, you can either join the Order or fight the Abbot. It's possible to defeat the Abbot, but it's certainly not easy. It's worth 500 gold and 501 XP to defeat him, and the story continues if he defeats you, so there's no reason not to try, and it's well worth using a Medicinal Ale or two during the battle to win it.
Before speaking to the Abbot, go to the grove in the northwest corner and go behind the wall and walk right into you enter a secret room at the back of the abbey containing 100 gold, a Medicinal Ale, and a Long Staff. Only a Thief can open the door, so this has to be done before speaking to the Abbot.
Once you've spoken to the Abbot, you become a Monk. As a Monk, you can finally cast magic. The Heal spell is written on the wall in the back of the room when you wake up. The entrance to the Cave of the Test is now open.
Cave of the Test
Treasures:
1-1: Medicinal Ale
1-7: Hygeian Herbs
2-4: Protector Ring
4-1: Medicinal Ale
4-6: Iron-shod Staff
5-1: Charmed Braid
Heal spell: 2-4
Smite spell: 3-5
Now that you have the Heal spell, use magic to heal between battles before using your Hygeian Herbs and Medicinal Ale. Both HP and MP are fully restored whenever you reach a new level.
You start in 1-4, and it's probably worth going to 1-5 to collect the Protector Ring, even though it only adds 1 point to your Defense. Also optional is the quest for the Iron-shod Staff and the Smite spell.
The Iron-shod staff is the most powerful weapon in the game. If you choose to get it, go from 1-4 to 1-5, 1-6, 1-7, collecing the Hygeian Herb, 2-7, 2-6, 3-6, through the crack into 4-6 to collect the Iron-shod Staff. Returning to 3-6, you can go to 3-5 to learn the Smite spell. It casts a maximum of 50 points of damage to a single enemy, and you should be able to do more damage than with your Iron-shod staff by now, so this is optional. Now return to 3-6, 2-6, 2-7, 1-7, 1-6, 1-5, and then follow the direct route from the bold 1-5.
The direct route skips the Iron-shod staff and Smite spell, which you probably won't need to defeat Hyeagle. Hyeagle is actually weaker than the Abbot. From the start at 1-4, go to 1-5, 2-5, 3-5, 3-4, through the crack into 4-4 to hit the button, then back to 3-4, 3-3, 3-2, 2-2, 1-2, and 1-1, collecting the Charmed Braid and hitting the button. Return to 1-2, 2-2, 3-2, 3-3, 4-3, and defeat Hyeagle. Then approach the altar in 5-3, and take the teleport in 5-4 back to Liber Abbey. This is the end of the game!
Trivia
The word "incunabula" is the plural form of incunabule or incunabulum, which is any book that was printed before 1501 in Europe. This period is notable because Johanned Gutenberg introduced movable type to Europe in 1450.
Communities that are supposed to appear in the registered version of the game are Hyalina, Perniscia, Eryx, and Hyrcinia.
