RSD Game-Maker

Post by ejrt »

Hey! I've been invited to come over and ask the same question that I asked over at DOSGames.com. Namely...

Image

For a while I have been researching Recreational Software Designs' Game-Maker (1991), the first graphical game creation system for MS-DOS. I've been talking to its users and archiving their games where possible. I was wondering -- has anyone here used RSD Game-Maker, and if so do you still have access to your old material? I'd love to get in contact.

To make this thread more useful, here's my current vote for the top five Game-Maker games:

Parsec Man 3D

Image
Invasion of the Blobs II: The Evolution Revolution

Image
Blinky 2: The Return of Blinky

Image
Badman II: He's Back Again!

Image
Orb: The Derelict Planet

Also to overload and possibly expand the topic, if anyone remembers any Game-Maker games that I have yet to dig up then I would be really interested to hear about them.

So. Whaddaya say? Ringing a bell with anyone?

A-J's Quest!

Also, there's at least two "die blarney" games on that engine.

I try to save some when I see them. New Age Warrior wins for the title screen alone

A fire-breathing Tyrannousaurus Rex who is a member of NSDAP? Apparently, only a kid in hand-painted forest camo outfit can tackle such a threat

There's a second Die Blarney? Tell me more! The first is actually rather better than one would expect!

I have yet to track down its author. Curiously, there are many Felix Leungs in Ontario.

There's also a second NAW game called Reptalia, and a few sequels and spin-offs to A-J's Quest.

(Lesser title screen; slightly more playable game.)

(Sort of an action shooter hybrid thing.)

So. there's some big news on this front. Last weekend original programmer Andy Stone released the source code and posted it to GitHub:

https://github.com/gandrewstone/GameMaker

Right now it's early on and exact goals are yet undefined, but one of the first tasks at hand is to port the code to modern operating systems. If that sounds cool and you think you can help out, that would be super!

There's a bit of enthusiasm around this release -- the software has been proprietary for a very long time -- so this Saturday weirdo indie site is celebrating with a two-hour game jam:

http://www.glorioustrainwrecks.com/node/7454

If that sounds more up your alley, you can go sign up for that there!

Just think. You could be the author of the next Capn Zapn or Preggers!
