It works fine on XP for me, without any compatibility mode settings or anything.

Have you tried native XP or maybe the Virtual PC option?

So, I installed Windows XP in VirtualBox and that solved my transparency issues with Monolith games. For some reason, Claw is unplayable because I can barely jump! I've tried changing the jump key, slowing down the keyboard repeat delay, using a gamepad instead of the keyboard, and running the game in Compatibility Mode, but nothing is resolving this problem.

Glad you have it working, but too bad there are still issues.

Outlive is a Starcraft clone from a Brazilian developer that is actually not at all bad. The demo (get it at FilePlanet) includes a tutorial, a three-mission mini-campaign, and two skirmish/multiplayer maps. Only the human side is available for play in the demo.

There's also another, even more obvious clone of Starcraft, this time from Korea (which is rather unsurprising), called Atrox. This one looks and feels a lot like its inspiration, although isn't quite the same altogether. The demo includes 5 missions from the human campaign.

In other news, there's a demo of Jurassic War available from this Slovakian gaming magazine's cover disk.

Just found a demo of War Wind which is different from the probably more well-known one (available from C|NET among other places):
http://volftp.tiscali.it/pub/pc/windows ... /wwd12.exe

This demo features two missions for the Tha'roon, while the other demo has four missions, one per race.

A very interesting series of shareware games from a German developer has just caught my attention: the Clonk series. This is a curious blend of the side-scrolling action and strategy genres, packed with nice graphics and design. The older instalments are officially free.

I'd like to see KKnD on this site.
There are at least 3 demo versions:
November 01, 1996 (No sound)
January 23, 1997 (Sound!)
early or mid 1997, German demo

I couldn't get the second demo to work :(
(at least not on XP and with dos box)

How about Empire Deluxe? There's an old demo of the classic 1993 version, and also a demo of the recent updated Internet Edition.

There's also the classic Empire: Wargame of the Century, which is a predecessor of Empire Deluxe. A DOS version 5.0 is available at cd.textfiles.com:
http://cd.textfiles.com/gigagames9308/M ... PIRE50.ZIP

And a Windows-compatible version can be obtained from Walter Bright's website.

Looks nice! :D

I thought Midnight Synergy sounded familiar when clicking the link, turned out they're the people behind Shadow Force.

They also have some neat newer games too :)

[Edit] I've tried to locate the shareware version, found info on v1.0, the archive is called CARNSW10.ZIP:
http://cd.textfiles.com/swextrav8/swext ... rnsw10.zip
http://www.giffer.com/public/dos/pgam2/ ... RNSW10.ZIP
http://volftp.tiscali.it/pub/pc/windows ... rnsw10.zip

Unfortunately, in all cases the archive has a comment added by a third party.

Just stumbled upon a very cute Mario-esque shareware platform game:

Jasper's Journeys
Developer: John White
Publisher: PabaGames
License type: Shareware
Release date: 1997
Versions: 1.0, 1.1
Download v1.0: JASPER1.ZIP
Download v1.1: JASPER11.ZIP

Screenshots:

What's more, the developer, John White, is still active. He's got his own studio, Lexaloffle Games, and has created an updated version of the game for Windows, Mac and Linux (with high-res graphics). The demo is available here.

A couple of very nice flight simulation games, from Rowan Software:

Dawn Patrol
A historically accurate WWI flight simulation game, with one playable scenario in the demo version. Supports SVGA mode.
Download standard version: DAWNL.ZIP
Download version with SVGA support: DAWNH.ZIP
A slightly different version (also supports SVGA):
http://cd.textfiles.com/101bg3/PAGE3/DPATROL/

Air Power: Battle in the Skies
Another flight sim from the same developers as Dawn Patrol, but this one takes place in an alternate history steampunk setting. There's one mission in the playable demo, and SVGA mode is also supported.
Download earlier demo: INSTALL.EXE
Download later demo: APDEMO.EXE

Here are now finally the KKnD demos that I mentioned above:
http://www37.zippyshare.com/v/97726031/file.html

The second demo should have missions for Survivors and Evolved, but it doesn't work on my PC :(
The two german demos have one mission for each faction.
