BTW, I think it is also worth noting that the Hexen demo that is split into 3.5" diskette parts comes with an installer, while the single zip archive has just plain game files.

Litude, you mentioned a version of Wolfenstein 3-D shareware that features the Apogee logo on the title screen. What version number is it? Is this version publicly available anywhere?

I already have that version on my list.

Didn't notice that one, nice catch. It's quite tough to find the version with the installer online though (if you don't search in the id historic folders), I wonder if the real online distribution was just the files.

That screenshot can be seen when installing the Wolfenstein 3D shareware from e.g. the Rise of the Triad CD. It is also included in the Wolfenstein 3D vendor screenshots pack. I don't have that build myself, but it is probably some late beta build.

1.1 has the Apogee logo... I thought all of them had. Some builds of 1.4 had that replaced with GT Interactive's logo (id Anthology in particular), and one Activision rerelease replaced that appropriately with the Activision logo.

I have seen Hexen repacked by a few game magazine bundle CDs for ease of their installing-off-the-disc Windows interfaces. I doubt it was ever officially out like that, it's just not the Romero way!

He meant on the title screen, not the start-up/initializing screen.

The split-up version that has the installer is right in the idstuff/hexen folder:
Hexen Demo Part 1
Hexen Demo Part 2
Hexen Demo Part 3
Hexen Demo Part 4
It's the same final version of the demo as the usual distribution package.

Three cheers for Litude for finding the long lost registered version of Next Generation Trivia!

Not exactly a missing version, but here's what appears to be a sound patch for the Mortal Kombat II demo:
http://cd.textfiles.com/gigagames3/DOS/ ... 2PATCH.ZIP

I haven't tested it yet though.

Here are two more versions of the In Pursuit of GREED Demo:
In Pursuit of GREED DEMO v7.0 [Added to the site]
In Pursuit of GREED Demo (Old)

The old demo, which comes from 1995 (whereas v7.0 has date stamps from 1996), has different levels and objectives, from another episode/mission of the game.

How are you able to tell what the timestamp in v7.0 is? I can't find any program that will open it as a zip file.

Oh, I just use this build of DOSBox, it preserves the original date/time stamps on files that are extracted with various DOS installers (among other things).

BTW, that build also allows to set an internal date in DOSBox, which is useful for running those alphas and betas of id, Raven (and possibly other companies') games, including those mentioned above.

That's awesome, I had no idea that it did that! I had gone back to vanilla DOSBox.

I think I unintentionally discovered that feature with the original timestamps - I got that build for the internal debugger in the first place.

I got that build for the superior Direct3D output which seems more stable in windows 7
