Thanks WhiteMagicRaven. I've actually always had a copy of the original demo, but I didn't put it online because the graphics screw up almost immediately (at least in DOSBox). I've tried your version, and the same thing happens. The demo is absolutely unplayable in DOSBox. It's hard to imagine that they would have released a buggy, unplayable demo to PC Gamer, so I've been working from the assumption that the copy on the internet is corrupted, or perhaps there's something wrong with DOSBox's emulation.

I just tried it and it seems to work fine for me, what's the problem? If you go straight ahead at the beginning the screen will start to go a bit sort of blurry, but that's an effect because you're being shot - if you run right up to the enemy and fire a few times you'll kill him, then the screen starts going back to normal once you're no longer under attack.

Holy crap, it's supposed to be that bad? The graphics get so screwed up that it's nearly impossible to aim at the attacker. If I run away and then stand still, the graphics return to normal in about a minute. Oddly, if I move around they go back to normal in about 10 seconds. Movement seems to speed up the process. But seriously, I don't know how anyone can successfully shoot anything once the graphics get messed up like that.

Okay, the graphics seem to clear up instantly if I kill the attacker. The only way to reliably hit him is to run so close that you can't miss. This demo sucks, but it's playable.

I think it's supposed to be the distortions the player characters "cybernetic" vision gets when he's hit. The only thing worse than that is the constantly blinking HUD in Rex Blade/Domination that happens whenever your run out of energy (and there's never enough of it in the levels to play properly); luckily you can turn the HUD off entirely to get rid of the blinking screen.

I've been randomly searching for info about DOS shareware games, and found this interesting game called Cold Dreams. Here's a video showing gameplay on YouTube:
http://youtu.be/A2R4TV2loGs

It's a nicely done shareware platform game with quite good graphics and music. Unfortunately, it seems to be incredibly rare too. So far, I've only been able to find a few "abandonware" sites with the full pirated version, and also mentions of the shareware version in a file that is supposedly called COLDREAM.ZIP and is 2167442 bytes in size, but both webpages that mention it no longer exist except in Google's cache.

[Edit] The loveable guys at MBNet suggest a different name, COLDDREA.ZIP, and a different file size.

Hey, just registered, really like and appreciate the site.

This seems to be the place for game suggestions for the site, I have quite a few, the first one being somewhat unknown I'd say.

Last Rites by Ocean Software, a 1997 DOS FPS.

MobyGames link

Anyone else heard of it? I actually enjoyed it quite a bit.

I've read about it and seen a gameplay video on YouTube. Does it have a playable demo/shareware version? Or have the developers released it as freeware?

It was never freewared and there's no demo available.

It's shockingly similar to Left4Dead :P

That's a shame there is no demo, I was not aware of that.

Perhaps you have already gotten the suggestion to add Powerslave?

These folks host the shareware of it. http://dukertcm.com/

Pity there's no demo, the game looks interesting.

Yep, I've mentioned the game before in this thread (BTW, many of the suggested games are still to be featured on the site, so you might actually find something interesting/new among the suggestions :)). I've also found a rather rare version of the Powerslave demo sometime ago (links are here), which is in-between the public beta and the final release demo chronologically, and has two first levels of the game, and a scrolling intro narration not found in other versions. (It's called "freeware" in the readme, and I've called it just that in the post, but let that not confuse you, it's just a late beta demo.)

[Edit] I just realized that Corvin added the "freeware" beta demo version to the RTCM downloads page when I notified him of its existence ^_^

Hello

MVP Software released some of their shareware games as freeware:

Interesting - just downloaded Pickle Wars from MVP to try it out. "This program requires Microsoft Windows." :-(

How about adding Serious Sam and its add-on? The demo versions (and, in case of First Encounter, public tech/compatibility test demos too) are available at FilePlanet:
Serious Sam: The First Encounter Demo and Public Test Download
Serious Sam: The Second Encounter Demo Download
