I noticed that when you exit the games they have slightly different exit texts. The first episode mentions version 3.0 while the second just says registered. This leads me to think that they are different versions. I too am having trouble playing the first one in dosbox, as it is really slow.

haha when I play this game the song gets stuck in my head 
Not a bad game though.
(On a side note, this is one of the toughest games I've tried. I'm still stuck on the 1st castle.)
