You can play DOS games right in your browser here. They are not ports, but the original game running in a Java based virtual PC. Take a look:

JPC is an incredible accomplishment. The website you linked to is using disk images created with Bochs to allow games to be played in a Java browser window. Unfortunately, most of the games on that site aren't shareware or freeware. Making them available to be played online is just as illegal as distributing copyrighted software. I can't allow links to abandonware sites in the forum. I'm definitely interested in the possibility of adding JPC to Classic DOS Games, though!

I was playing Keen on it. It seemed pretty good, but I noticed it seemed a bit jittery from the way I remembered it.
While nice, I'll stick to using DosBox .72

Yeah JPC seems to be slow (nowhere near their proclaimed 30% native cpu speed) , and lacks any sound for me.
what's horrible is that there's a link to their warez-filled site below the emulator viewport

Most platform, educational, and card/board games seem to work pretty well. A few games are "jittery", by which I mean that they seem to alternate between being slightly too slow and slightly too fast all the time. Also, games that have a HUD (heads up display) like Crystal Caves and Secret Agent scroll in a very blocky way. DOSBox used to have the same problem, and it still doesn't emulate the colored border in those games.Legalmumbojumbo wrote:I was playing Keen on it. I think they claim 20%. Some games seem incredibly slow, while others play way too fast for me (Epic Pinball, Vinyl Goddess From Mars). The lack of sound is because they seem to be using Bochs to emulate an x86 CPU, FreeDOS for DOS support, and free VGA BIOS and mouse software. I don't see any software that's attempting to emulate a Sound Blaster.leilei wrote:Yeah JPC seems to be slow (nowhere near their proclaimed 30% native cpu speed) , and lacks any sound for me.

The only condition that JPC's authors placed on my use of JPC is that, "as part of the GPL general conditions", I should leave the "Powered By JPC…" link at the bottom of the applet window. You're quite right that some of the games in their demos are illegal to distribute. I've sent them an email advising them of which games are illegal in their hard drive images, and suggested replacements. For instance, they could just as easily be using the shareware demo of Lemmings.
