Various releases and third-party content for old games

Post by MrFlibble »

Recently I've been digging cd.textfiles.com and other sources for various stuff, and found some things that could be of interest. First off, here are some third-party extras for Dune II: The Building of A Dynasty, including trainers, cheat programmes and editors:

Editors
D2CHT10.ZIP - DUNE 2 CHEAT The Ultimate Cheat Program v1.0 by Jens Defendorf. [a unit and structure editor for v1.0]
DUNE2CHT.ZIP - C.k.'s Dune ][ INI file editor.
DUNE2ED2.ZIP - Dune 2 Save Game Editor & Dune 2 Scenario Editor by C.k.
DUNEEDIT.ZIP - Dune II: Building Of A Scenario by Beloglazov V.
EDDUNE.ZIP - DUNE II Saved Game File Editor Version 1.5.

Trainers
DUN2TR07.ZIP - Dune II : MEGA-Trainer by Network (for v1.07).
DUN2TR10.ZIP - Dune II : MEGA-Trainer by Network (for v1.0).
DUN2TRNR.ZIP - RAZOR DUNE ][ TRAINER.
DUNE2_T2.ZIP - DUNE II Trainer V1.1 by Hal 9000.
DUNE2_TR.ZIP - Dune II trainer.
DUNE2CHT.ZIP - Dune ][ cheat. [money trainer]
DUNE2MM2.ZIP - Dune 2 Money Maxxer v2.0.
DUNE2TRN.ZIP - DUNE ][ TRAINER. [money trainer]
TRDUNE2.ZIP - DUNE II Trainer V1.1 by Hal 9000. [same as above but doesn't have the extra patch file]

Miscellaneous
DUNE2AIL.ZIP - Dune II GUS patch.
DUNE2FAQ.ZIP - DUNE II FAQ & Strategy Guide Revision 1.3.
DUNE2PAT.ZIP - Westwood's Dune II v1.07 patch with READ.ME file included.
DUNE2SAV.ZIP - custom Dune II scenarios (in the form of saved games) by Bjorn.

Also, here are the various releases of SLASH, a version of NetHack (upon which the newer Slash'EM version is based):

Release 3: SLASH3.ZIP
Release 4: SLASH4.ZIP
Release 5: SLASH5.ZIP
Release 6: SLASH6.ZIP
Release 2 & 3 source: SLASHSRC.ZIP
Release 6 source: SLASHSR6.ZIP
Slash 4.1.2-7 beta: SLASH_E7.ZIP

And here's the official Strife press-release: STRIFEPR.ZIP.

Another very interesting Dune II goodie is a version of SETUP.EXE that allows not only to pick a language from the official three but also select separate devices for sound effects, music and speech:
DUNE2STP.ZIP

The description on that CD says:
DUNE2STP.ZIP 45441 11-09-92 Update for Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty
| that allows for two sound cards to be used at
| the same time (Roland SBlaster, etc.).
| (Newest File Date: 11-09-92)
Which suggests that this must have been some official release (it certainly can't be a hacked version of the US version SETUP.EXE because the strings with language names on the language selection screen are inside the EXE, not in SETUP*.DIP, and are not present in the US version of the setup programme).

For some reason the files is called SETUP2.EXE and the date stamp is November 9, 1992, which makes it a very early version of the three-language edition (the dates on the files from three-language releases are from 1993 already). In fact, the date stamp on the official sound fix available from Westwood FTP is November 23, 1992.

Here's a neat FTP with various NetHack releases:
http://ftp.sunet.se/pub/games/nethack/

It even has the old versions of the original Hack:

Thanks for pointing that out! I've never played X-Wing though, only some TIE Fighter, but flying in space is too confusing for me :)

Not that I don't like flight sims - played a lot of F-19 Stealth Fighter back in the day ^_^

BTW, leilei, do you collect fansite kits? I've noticed that UT2003 and UT2004 fansite kits are pretty huge in size, there must be lots of official art and such like stuff that might have not been released otherwise (haven't checked that though). Those, and also desktop themes etc. can be pretty interesting sometimes. E.g. the C&C95 desktop theme includes a "Negative!" unit response sound clip that was actually never included in any release of the actual game's files - I can only guess what kind of in-game situations this could have been planned for.

BTW, there's a zip with a Dune II Windows desktop theme as well (usually called DUNE2THM.ZIP), but I have no idea if it is official or not. It can be downloaded from FED2k.

Googling for DUNE2THM.ZIP came up with some old pages that list various desktop themes (links don't work though), but those seem to be mostly fan-made:

The AVIs intended for the C&C screensaver have older music mixes and are dated much earlier than the game itself.

Yeah, and there are also trailers that feature cut FMVs from the game too (Nyerguds actively collects those).

BTW, what is the correct/established way of labelling the first public release of Doom, v1.0 or v0.99?

Hmm, two different demo versions of Body Blows: [Added to the site]
BBDEMO.ZIP
BODYBLOW.ZIP

Also two different demo versions of Project X:
PXDEMO.ZIP (identical to the one on Team17's FTP except for some file names)
http://cd.textfiles.com/cdromgamesgdc1/GAMES/PROJECTX/
The second one is not archived and the readme makes references to East Point Software Ltd.

Just stumbled upon a ZIP with assorted Windows desktop icons for Apogee games:
APOGICON.ZIP

Apparently it's official although I can't find it at 3DRelams' FTP.

Some search came up with other packs at cd.textfiles.com:
APOGICO.ZIP
APOGICON.ZIP

These two don't seem to be official, although I'm not sure about it either.

[Edit] Found info on the official icon pack:
